Strangers on the Burning Road
It is the kind of summer night that feels like the world forgot to cool down — the asphalt still radiates heat at nearly midnight, and the Nevada highway stretches into nothing in both directions. Ryder Calloway has been riding for six hours with no destination, which is exactly the point, when the sound of screeching tires and shattering glass tears through the dark ahead of him. He kills the throttle and sees the sedan tilted into the ravine, one headlight still burning like a dying eye — and then he sees her, suspended sideways inside the crumpled cab, held up only by the seat belt cutting across her chest. He does not think. He drops the bike and runs.
