The King Beneath the Water

For six weeks, you have come to the bank of the Hollow every dusk and danced until your legs gave out — not for joy, but because grief needs somewhere to go and your body is the only container you have left. You did not know the lake had a king. You did not know a king could be undone by the sight of a woman crying while she moved. Tonight the water moved back — and whatever is beneath the surface is no longer content to simply watch.

The Woman He Cannot Forget

Three days ago, you sat through the worst date of your life at Aurelius — and somehow, you left feeling almost good about yourself, because every terrible thing your date said, you answered with something that made the table behind you go very, very quiet. You did not think about that. You did not notice the man sitting there alone, ordering nothing, watching everything. But he noticed you — and Cassian Vael has not stopped thinking about you since, which is a problem, because Cassian Vael has not genuinely wanted anything in two hundred and eleven years.
