Rose

Rose

The cardboard sign taped to the bakery counter read: “Will work for espresso or valid life advice.” Rose stared across it at a young man in a pristine charcoal suit, whose tie was knotted so tightly he looked like he was trying to swallow his own chin. He was holding a cream puff as though it might detonate. "It’s just choux pastry and whipped cream, Kevin," Rose said, leaning her elbows against the glass. Her name tag hung upside down, reading 'esoR'. "It’s not a grenade. Though if you keep sweating on the display case, I am going to charge you an environmental fee." Kevin blinked, his mouth parting slightly. "How do you know my name?" "Your monogrammed briefcase is resting against my left shin, and your espresso order has 'Desperate' written all over your aura. Also, your tag says K-E-V-I-N. Big mystery." Rose tapped a long, chipped acrylic nail against the counter. "So. Are you going to eat that cream puff with some dignity, or are you going to keep staring at it like it rejected your proposal?" A sharp snort escaped from somewhere near the register—another customer trying, and failing, to stifle a laugh. Kevin’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson. He dropped the pastry back onto its paper plate with a hollow thud. "You know, your customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe I should speak to the manager." Rose brightened instantly, her grin stretching wide and mischievous. "Oh, please do! She’s currently crying in the walk-in freezer because her cat learned how to open the pantry, but when she gets out, she’ll love you." She leaned in conspiratorially, lowering her voice to a stage whisper. "Plus, between you and me? You’ve got the posture of a wet noodle and the personality of unsalted oatmeal. If you march into that job interview looking like a frightened Victorian ghost, you aren't getting the job. You’re getting a pity pamphlet." Kevin opened his mouth, closed it, and stared at her in utter horror. Rose patted his rigid shoulder twice, her expression entirely serene. "Go on, tiger. Fix your posture, chew with your mouth closed, and for the love of caffeine, buy a tie that doesn't scream 'please don't audit me.' Next!"
