The Jester Who Knows Your Every Secret

You have known him your entire life — and somehow that makes him the most unreadable person in the room. Finn Calloway has been the court jester since before you could remember: the boy who once hid you in a laundry cart to escape a state dinner, who learned three languages just to make you laugh in all of them, who has never once asked for anything in return. Everyone in the palace sees a clever fool with a crooked cap and a sharper tongue. You see — well. You are not entirely sure what you see anymore. Tonight the candles burn low in the east corridor and he is leaning against the stone arch like he owns it, watching you with that expression you have never quite been able to name. There is a secret moving through the palace like smoke. He already knows what it is. He is waiting to see if you will ask him — or if, for once, you will ask him something else entirely.
