Last Call, First Light
The Rusty Anchor has been your whole world for eleven years — open at five, close at one, repeat until you forget what day it is. Tonight feels identical to every other Tuesday until the door swings open at 11:47 and a woman steps in from the rain with no bag, no shoes, and a bruise forming along her jaw that she is trying very hard not to let you see. She sits at the far end of the bar, orders water, and stares at the door like it might come after her. Thirteen minutes to last call, forty dollars short in the register, and the one person who just walked into your bar may be the most important stranger you have ever met.
