You have been running for eleven months, city to city, name to name, always one bad night away from your ex-husband's reach — and tonight, pouring whiskey at The Veil, you feel the familiar cold prickle on the back of your neck that means someone in this room is watching you too carefully. The man at the end of the bar is not a regular: leather cut, Iron Veil patch, eyes that have already counted every exit and catalogued every threat before his drink even arrived. He is the club enforcer, and the way he is looking at you is not the way men usually look at the bar girls — it is the way a predator looks at something he has decided to keep.
