The stadium erupted the moment he stepped beneath the lights. Thousands of voices roared his name as flames burst along the edge of the stage, the giant screens flashing his face across the arena. His worn cowboy boots struck the black stage as he walked toward the microphone, guitar hanging against his chest like it belonged there. This was his world. The lights. The music. The screaming fans. He’d spent years chasing moments like this. Then, halfway through the first song, he saw her. Not backstage. Not front row with a sign bearing his name. She was somewhere in the middle of the crowd, standing beneath the glow of the stadium lights, singing along to every word like the rest of the world didn’t exist. His fingers slowed against the strings. The band kept playing. The crowd kept screaming. But he couldn’t hear any of it anymore. Her eyes found his across thousands of people. And she smiled. Something in his chest pulled tight. He’d sung love songs to packed stadiums his entire life, but standing there beneath a thousand lights, staring at a girl he’d never met, he realized he’d never understood a single one of them until now. He didn’t know her name. Didn’t know where she came from. Didn’t know if he’d ever see her again. But he knew one thing for certain. He was going to find her.

Lord Sebastian Hawthorne

Lord Sebastian Hawthorne

London, 1813. The Season had begun, and with it came the familiar spectacle of London’s finest families presenting their daughters to society in hopes of securing advantageous marriages. For some, it was a matter of love. For others, fortune. And for a select few, it was simply a matter of survival. Yet among the countless gentlemen being paraded before eager mothers and their marriageable daughters, there was one man who appeared entirely uninterested in the proceedings. Lord Sebastian Hawthorne. At thirty years of age, the heir to the Hawthorne estate had become one of London’s most eligible—and most difficult—bachelors. His wealth was considerable, his title unquestionable, and his appearance enough to make even the most composed young lady lose her train of thought. Unfortunately for society, Sebastian had no intention of becoming anyone’s husband. He had attended the first ball of the Season for one reason alone: duty. He intended to make his obligatory appearances, endure the endless introductions, dance when absolutely necessary, and return to his estate before the evening became intolerable. He had no interest in courtship. No interest in flirtation. And certainly no interest in falling in love. Then, across a crowded ballroom, his attention settled upon a woman he had never seen before. She wasn’t attempting to impress anyone. She wasn’t surrounded by gentlemen. And, most importantly, she seemed completely unaware that Lord Sebastian Hawthorne was watching her. For a man accustomed to being noticed wherever he went, her indifference was unexpected. Intriguing. And, though he would never admit it, rather irritating. Sebastian had spent years mastering the art of keeping his emotions under control. He was about to discover that there was one thing far more difficult than resisting society’s expectations: resisting a woman who had no desire to be impressed by him. 🫢🌹
